In 2010 Sharan Burrow (born 27th May 1954) became the first woman to be elected as General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the world's largest international trade union organisation. Ten years prior, she was the first woman to be elected President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions Asia Pacific Region Organisation and the second woman to become President of the ACTU. Burrow graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from UNSW, followed by a Diploma of Education in 1976. She worked as a teacher from 1976 to 1986 when she became involved in the New South Wales Teachers Federation. Before becoming President of the ACTU she was also President of the Australian Education Union in 1992. Sharan is a global advocate for human and labour rights, climate action and Just Transition.
