In October 1992 at age 21, Mining Engineering student Rebecca Scott was named as UNSW's first woman Rhodes Scholar. The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the most prestigious international postgraduate scholarships and invites students to study at the University of Oxford. Rebecca graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) with Honours from UNSW in 1993 and received the UNSW Alumni Award. She commenced at Oxford University in October 1993, where she completed a Bachelor or Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Change and Management. Rebecca was also the first woman to be legally employed as an underground mine worker in the NSW coal industry.
