Born in 1961, Professor Margaret Sheil is a distinguished academic and university administrator. Her promotion to Professor of Chemistry at the University Wollongong University in 2000 made her the first woman chemistry professor in Australia. Sheil obtained a Bachelor of Science and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from UNSW and was a UNSW Science and Technology Alumni Award winner in 2016. She has had many leadership roles at universities across Australia and was appointed Vice-Chancellor and President of Queensland University of Technology in 2018. Professor Sheil is a trailblazer for women in science, recognised for her efforts to increase the participation, pay and recognition of women in STEM.
Margaret Sheil has won numerous awards for her achievements, including being made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2017 for her services to science and higher education. She was also elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in May 2021.
