BE Mining (UNSW) 1975
Joan Bath became the first woman to graduate in Mining Engineering at UNSW on 14th April 1975. Bath graduated at a time when women were not permitted to work in underground mines, however she went on to become the first woman to be employed as a mining engineer, and throughout her career secured numerous senior positions including Director and Principal Consultant at Amet Mining. She also became the first woman to gain a first-class quarry manager certification in Western Australia. Bath is a trailblazer for women in mining and has spent her career pioneering huge change in an otherwise male-dominated industry.
The Joan Bath Prize for Women in Mining Engineering is awarded today at UNSW recognising the best academic performance by a female student in the final year of the Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering Program.
