Amongst her many achievements, Justice Margaret Stone was a much loved and revered teacher at UNSW Sydney, a partner at Freehill Hollingdale & Page and a judge of the Federal Court of Australia. She taught at UNSW for 15 years from 1976 to 1991, during which she was appointed Sub-Dean in 1981, a position she held at UNSW’s Law School for seven years. In 2000, Stone was sworn in as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, and later appointed by the Federal Government as the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security in 2015. As recognition of her service to national security and legal education, she was awarded Officer of the Order of Australia in 2019.
Justice Stone graduated from The Australian National University with the University Medal in the mid 1970s before completing a Master of Laws at Yale University. In 2022, Stone was posthumously awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by UNSW, for her exceptional contributions to public service.
