In 2022, Justice Dina Yehia became the first person of Greek Egyptian descent on the Supreme Court Bench of NSW. She was born in Egypt and came to Australia at the age of seven. Justice Yehia completed a Bachelor of Arts/Law at the University of NSW in 1989 and worked as a solicitor at the Western Aborginal Legal Service for seven years. An advocate for equity and social justice, Justice Yehia worked at Legal Aid before being appointed as a barrister in 1999. She spent the following 14 years at the Public Defender’s Office where she was appointed Senior Counsel and later became the first woman to be a NSW Deputy Senior Public Defender. Justice Yehia was appointed District Court Judge in 2014, is a Council member of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration and the National Judicial College of Australia. She is also Chair of the Ngara Yura Committee, the Walama Court Working Group, and Diverse Women in Law, which all work towards greater equity in the justice system.
