Professor Lumbers is an internationally respected expert in cardiovascular, renal and reproductive physiology. She was the first woman awarded a CJ Martin Fellowship and studied foetal physiology at Oxford University. Afterwards Eugenie was employed at UNSW and continued her research. In 1986 she was awarded a Doctorate in Science at UNSW and a personal Professorial Chair. Eugenie was appointed Head of School of Physiology and Pharmacology for nine years and became UNSW’s first woman Scientia Professor. Several years after retiring in 2003, Professor Lumbers researched the effects of maternal health in Indigenous communities and in 2016 wrote a children’s book. During her career Eugenie published over 200 articles. She was elected to the Australian Academy of Science and Royal Society of NSW, received the Centenary Medal of Federation and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.
