Born 8 June 1928, Professor Pamela Rickard was the first woman professor in a science faculty at UNSW. In 1961 she became the first woman to graduate from UNSW with a Master of Science in Biological Sciences. She had a distinguished and internationally recognised career in the field of biotechnology - notably enzyme technology and microbial metabolism. From 1957-1960 Professor Rickard was a Teaching Fellow in the School of Biological Sciences before moving to London to Complete a PhD on porphyrin synthesis in human red blood cells. In 1965 she returned to UNSW as a lecturer and in 1981 was appointed as the foundation professor of biotechnology, of which she was a founding member. After her retirement in 1988 she was given the title of Emeritus Professor.
