Jacqueline and Gordon Samuels, who married in 1957, both dedicated a large portion of their lives to serving UNSW. Jackie Samuels (born 8 September 1927) was a distinguished actor who advocated strongly for the arts. At UNSW, Jacqueline was a member and President of the U-Committee and a key organiser of the UNSW Bookfair and the Kensington HSC Lectures, both of which raised considerable amounts of money. She was also a patron of the Alumni Association and a donor. UNSW conferred the degree of Doctor of the University on Jacqueline Samuels in 1994 in honour of her services to the University. The Hon. Dr Gordon Samuels was born on 12 August 1923 and served as the 36th Governor of New South Wales from 1996 to 2001. A barrister, then a Queen's Counsel, he was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1972. He became a member of the UNSW Council in 1969 and served as Chancellor from 1976 to 1994, making him the longest-serving Chancellor of UNSW. Both Samuels committed much of their time to UNSW, working to build a strong culture and community and are remembered for their lasting contributions to the University.
