In 1971, Catherine Harris was the first woman to graduate from UNSW with a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing. The following year she co-founded the successful fruit and vegetable chain Harris Farm Markets which began as a small fruit and vegetable shop in Western Sydney. She later worked at UNSW as Director of Alumni Relations from 1993-1994, served on UNSW Council from 1998–2005 and was UNSW Deputy Chancellor from 2000-2003. UNSW recognised her with an Honorary Doctorate in Business in 2008 and an Alumni Award in 2009. Catherine has extensive business experience and is the Director of Tyro Payments and The Australian Ballet. She has board positions in the UNSW Business School, the MCA, The Australian Defence Force Academy, The National Gallery of Australia, and the Australian Japan Foundation. She is also the Honorary Consul for Bhutan and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2006.
