Born 19 January 1930, Anita Lawrence was the University's first woman architecture graduate and the first woman to receive a University Medal. She was granted a BArch with First Class Honours in 1955 and a Master of Architecture in 1957. Anita Lawrence was appointed Associate Professor of the Graduate school of Built Environment and had a 32-year teaching career at UNSW in which she specialised in acoustics and design. She was also one of the founding members of the Australian Acoustical Society. Passionate and generous, A/Prof Anita Lawrence donated $2.3M in her will towards furthering the department's expertise in architectural acoustics. The school honoured her career and contributions by creating the Anita Lawrence Chair in High Performance Architecture in the Faculty of Built Environment.
