Annada Gohain was born in the Assam region of India and was the first woman to graduate from UNSW’s School of Chemical Engineering. After earning a degree in Chemistry, she came to Australia in 1955 to take part in a specially created Food Technology course under the Colombo Plan. She was granted her Master of Science on 13 July 1959 and her thesis was titled the “Production of high quality orange juice concentrate”. During her time at the University, she was also one of the students who met Prince Philip when he visited in 1956. Upon returning to Assam, she joined the Assam Government and started a successful Fruit Preservation Factory.
Annada was later associated with a movement on food preservation through ‘community canning centres’ and eventually retired as the Additional Director for the Department of Agriculture in 1987.
