Alex Blackwell, born in 1983, is a former cricket captain and the most capped player in Australian women’s cricket, with a career that spanned 18 years until her retirement in 2019. Alex completed her Bachelor of Medicine at UNSW in 2007 and went on to work in genetics. In 2015 she left her job to become the first full-time women’s cricketer. Alex has been at the forefront for the women’s game, advocating for increased pay and more opportunities for women. In 2018 she became the first woman elected to the board of Cricket NSW and in 2019 was awarded an honorary doctorate by UNSW for “eminent service to society by advancing important causes.” In 2020 she received the Trailblazer Award recognising the work she has done in increasing opportunities for participation and leadership for women in sport.
